An “anti‐crown” sandwich : Symmetry‐allowed interactions of the filled p orbitals of the iodide ion with the corresponding empty p orbitals of the mercury atoms of B ‐hexamethyl‐9‐mercuracarborand‐3 result in three equivalent p Hg ‐p I ‐p Hg three‐center, two‐electron bonds (see picture) and a sandwich structure.
