The missing link in the series of tert ‐butyl derivatives of the isoelectronic nido clusters B 4 H 8 , CB 3 H 7 , and NB 3 H 6 with a bicyclobutane‐type structure is represented by the title compound CB 3 H 4 t Bu 3 ( 1 ), the clusters B 4 H 4 t Bu 4 and NB 3 H 3 t Bu 3 being well known. Compound 1 may also be considered to be a derivative of the nido ‐triborane B 3 H 7 , which has hitherto not been isolated, formed by replacing three H atoms by t Bu groups and two H atoms by a CH 2 bridge, as expressed by the formula B 3 H 2 t Bu 3 (CH 2 ).
