An intermediate en route to the Etard complex could be isolated and characterized after the reaction of CrO 2 Cl 2 with ethylene at 10 K [Eq. (1)]. Although olefin oxidation with CrO 2 Cl 2 usually proceeds in a very complex fashion to provide a large number of products, a selective oxo transfer reaction generates complex 1 upon irradiation under inert conditions—a result which is also relevant for understanding the reaction mechanism for such oxygenations.
