Carbon‐supported rhodium catalysts yield substantially more of the product of C−O bond scission ( 3 , see figure) than the alumina‐supported rhodium catalysts in the liquid‐phase hydrogenation of 1‐indanol ( 1 ). The high C−O bond scission capability of the carbon‐supported catalysts is due to direct hydrogenolysis that occurs on the carbon support with spillover hydrogen.
