A nonempirical method utilizing zinc porphyrin tweezers as chromophoric hosts for determining the absolute configuration of primary monoamines is described. A bidentate carrier was linked to the monoamines leading to conjugates capable of forming macrocyclic complexes with the porphyrin tweezer host (see scheme). The absolute stereochemistry of the monoamine can be determined from the sign of the circular dichroic couplet of the complexes.
