Investigation of a series of crystal structures of ammonium and phosphonium cyclopentadienide complexes suggests that the free Cp anion cannot be considered as a “naked” anion. Analyses of short cation–anion interactions show that networks of C−H⋅⋅⋅Cp − bonding exist. Structural as well as theoretical studies indicate that this type of C−H⋅⋅⋅Cp − bonding is like the hydrogen bond in character.
