The photobiological activity of the plant photoreceptor phytochrome in the far‐red‐absorbing form seems to be based on the anionic nature of its chromophore, given the high resemblance of its UV/Vis spectrum to that of deprotonated 2,3‐dihydrobilindiones of known structure such as 2 − .
