1,2,6‐Trioxacyclononanderivate 1 (X=O, S) sind durch elektrochemische Zwei‐Elektronen‐Reduktion der offenkettigen Dikationen 2 2+ an Luft gut zugänglich (siehe Schema). Durch oxidative Desoxygenierung der farblosen Endoperoxide 1 werden die orangefarbenen Dikationen 2 2+ zurückerhalten.
