Analytical models have been used in water resource management for a number of years, but these models have a number of disadvantages. Simulations have many advantages over analytical models, but were historically time‐consuming to develop. However, recent advances in computer hardware and software have made simulations easy to develop on personal computers. The Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) successfully used one of the recently developed simulators (Extend) to model their operations. The Extend software has been useful in evaluating a number of alternatives and is much more flexible than their existing FORTRAN simulation. While the existing FORTRAN simulation has not been replaced, Extend has greatly increased the SCVWD's modeling capability. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Syst Eng 1: 113–126, 1998
