Prior to 1975, when the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (I.D.E.A.; 20 U.S.C. §1400 et seq.) was first passed, schoolhouse doors were closed to many children with disabilities. Even as access to educational opportunities has increased, associated mental health services are frequently short‐changed. This article offers lessons and caveats for clinicians derived from recent legislative amendments and developments in the case law surrounding the I.D.E.A. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
