In this article we study the reliability importance of the components for the wide class of Markov chain imbeddable systems (MIS). Methods for the evaluation of Birnbaum importance are developed for a general MIS, and some generating function techniques are demonstrated for the special case of homogeneous MISs. As an application, the reliability ordering for the components of a k ‐out‐of‐ n and consecutive‐ k ‐out‐of‐ n structure is examined in some detail. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
