We often encounter signals composed of a base‐level signal slowly varying in time and a relatively fast varying signal of interest, such as electrocardiograms and video signals of cars moving on a road. In order to set the base‐level signal, we usually estimate the base‐level signal by a low‐pass filter using the difference of characteristics in the frequency domain between these two signals. However, a base level estimator of a linear filter is directly affected by the amplitude of the signal of interest. We propose a new base‐level signal estimator using a bilateral clamper that consists of two linear filters and a nonlinear element; moreover, we analyze it precisely and give rough design criteria. This estimator has a good response to the change of the base‐level signal, and well protects the characteristics of the signal of interest. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of this estimator with some examples. © 1999 Scripta Technica, Electr Eng Jpn, 129(1): 53–58, 1999
