Quality management is a new paradigm of management thought. The great amount of literature available about quality and the emergence of fads recommend the adoption of criteria to guide the choice of what to read and which ideas to adopt. A strong system of values built around the quality masters' works must be built and used as a filter, avoiding the corruption of what should be a strong core system of ideas and values. The ideas adopted now must take into account past contributions and foreseeable future developments. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
