Many Japanese firms have not adjusted to the aftermath of the bubble economy. The article explores reasons, arguing that many major Japanese firms followed an incremental strategy, whereas they now find themselves at the edge of chaos. A complete change of attitude is needed by the leaders of many companies. Suggestions are made for what is needed to take businesses into the 21st century. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
