One reason why a good football match is so attractive to many is that it is more than just a game ... it is about the management of change. In this article, the author attempts to develop a systematic method for change management, and to apply the method to solve the football match penalty shoot‐out problem. In the semi‐final World Cup 90 match, England lost to West Germany in the penalty shoot‐out. Six years later, the same result was repeated in Euro 96. The author identifies the real cause of the outcome. The lessons learnt are not only important for the World Cup 98 in particular, but also for managing change in general. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
