The bursting of the Japanese bubble means that much of the traditional way of management has to change. A study of the top performing companies reveals that all have taken fundamentally different approaches to what is normally seen as the Japanese approach. The article identifies five success criteria from a study of the top performers: 1 Successful Japanese companies combine operational measures with structural changes 2 They know their strengths and weaknesses 3 They apply human resource policies such as meritocracy 4 Leadership is powerful and from the top 5 They engage in a continuous pursuit of capability which offers a clear competitive edge. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
