Solar cells represent a critical technology for overcoming a number of global environmental problems and energy problems. This paper will review the history of photovoltaic research in Japan, its current status and application technologies of solar cells, concluding with a discussion of the prospects for a future global‐scale energy supply system based on solar cells.
