Soluble ladder‐like phenylene‐bridged polymethylsiloxane and polyvinylsiloxane were synthesized by precoupling, hydrolysis and polycondensation consecutively. They were characterized by infrared, 1 H‐NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), 13 C‐NMR, 29 Si‐NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, elementary analysis, viscosity and gel permeation chromatography measurement, etc., and proved to possess a ladder‐like molecule structure. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
