12‐methoxy‐Nb‐methylvoachalotine, an alkaloid purified from Peschiera campestris inhibited avian myeloblastosis virus reverse transcriptase activities. This inhibition was dependent on the template‐primer used; in comparison with polyriboadenylic acid, the polyribocytidylic acid‐directed reaction was more affected by the alkaloid. A similar inhibition by the alkaloid was observed both in the presence of polyriboadenylic acid or its 2′‐fluorinated analogue. This inhibition also occurred in the presence of Mn 2+ instead of Mg 2+ as the divalent cation. Classical non‐competitive inhibition kinetics were obtained with respect to activated DNA and to polyriboadenylic acid.
