A capillary electrophoresis method for the simultaneous determination of the steroidal alkaloid solasodine and the derived glycoside solasonine in plant samples has been developed. Because of the low solubility of solasodine in water and in water:ethanol solutions, a non‐aqueous buffer (600 m M acetic acid, 10 m M sodium hydroxide in methanol) was utilized. The signal was measured at 200 nm and the detection limit of solasodine was 8 mg/L. The method is fast, simple and precise, and good separations were obtained with the crude plant extracts. The influence of sodium and chloride ions in the sample matrix on the performance of the method is discussed. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
