The acidic compounds of the hexane extract of Vellozia flavicans could be selectively isolated when submitted to McCarthy and Duthie chromatography on a potassium hydroxide impregnated silica gel flash column followed by purification by C‐18 reversed‐phase semipreparative high pressure liquid chromatography. This method allowed the characterization of five acidic diterpenes, two of which could only be identified by co‐injection of the appropriate standards owing to their very low concentration in the extract. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
