This paper describes frost heaving in the Selenge River Basin in central Mongolia. Spatial information has been compiled according to predominant composition of the ground, soil moisture content and water level, permafrost distribution and temperature, and the depth of seasonal freezing/thawing of the ground. This allows the creation of a permafrost‐engineering geology map to predict the occurrence and intensity of frost heave. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
