Intelligent functions in packaging can have all kinds of forms. This paper focuses on methods of identifying a packaging and other important tasks which can be performed after identification: tracing, tracking, monitoring and sensing of conditions. The recent developments in ID‐technology and sensor technology make it possible to integrate intelligent identification tasks in low‐cost packaging systems in logistic usage.
