This article presents a way of precalculating cushioning diagrams. A physical model is developed by forming a system of equations from energy conservation and material laws. The theoretical result is compared with measured values in an example. The calculation procedure is explained. It is shown that the physical model is suitable for precalculating cushion diagrams. The limitations of the model are discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
