The 13 C‐urea breath test by infra‐red absorption or mass spectra has been extensively used to detect. Helicobacter pylori infection. However, commercially available 13 C‐urea contains higher 18 O, compared to natural urea. It is evidently important for this diagnosis to investigate the 18 O‐isotope effect on infra‐red absorption or mass spectra, based on the quantitative analysis of 18 O in 13 C‐urea. For this purpose, a new analytical method using mass spectroscopy has been established to determine 18 O abundance in urea. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
