The synthesis of 14 C‐2‐amino‐9‐(3‐hydroxymethyl‐4‐isopropoxycarbonyloxybut‐1‐yl)purine from [1‐ 14 C] diethyl malonate is described. The overall radiochemical yield of the product in a nine‐step sequence was 16.1%, and the compound's radiochemical purity was 98.5%. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
