This paper examines issues of power and control in mental health service provision, as discussed by African‐Caribbean parents within a series of focus groups. These issues are multi‐faceted and incorporate aspects of confidentiality, stigmatization, accessibility and ethnic matching. The impact of migration and the option of community self‐reliance are discussed, along with implications for the provision of mental health services. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
