An extraction method for geochemical use was investigated for its ability to withstand disturbances in extraction conditions. Factors believed to affect the performance of the method were selected and a fractional factorial design was set up. The chemical analysis was carried out and the elemental concentrations were recorded as the response. Analysis of variance showed which factors affected the responses most and which of the responses were relatively inert towards alterations in the extraction procedure. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
