An emphasis on the study of stress indicators in biological anthropology represents a move away from the identification of specific diseases to a more general analysis of malnutrition and infection in past populations. This paper reviews the current literature and discusses the methodological problems behind scoring and recording these conditions. Suggestions are made on how these problems may be addressed in the future. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
