An optical metropolitan area network employing packet switching and wavelength division multi‐accessing is discussed in this article. Two variations are presented. One employs a preassigned TDM scheme in conjunction with WDM. The other also uses TDM but assigns slots on a packet‐by‐packet basis. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
