Network management is tough. And it is going to quickly get tougher. Countless new distributed mission‐critical network applications are fast approaching. The average message size will explode with imaging, virtual reality, groupware, multimedia voice, animation, BLOBs (Binary Large Objects) and CAD components. Backbone transmission capacity must increase exponentially and be available as an interchangeable commodity.
