Divalproex is now commonly used to treat bipolar disorder in older patients. However, it has yet to be systematically studied in this population. This report describes six older bipolar patients treated with divalproex. Of the six, five showed some improvement with divalproex alone or in combination with other agents. Clearly, a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study is an important next step to assess this promising medication. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
