A general analysis for multi‐phase multi‐component systems, which is in phase equilibrium, is carried out. The analysis is done in terms of the general form of the cubic equation of state. The analysis is represented in terms of different models. For binary two‐phase mixtures, the mole fraction of each component in the specified phase is given in closed form, if possible, or the governing equations, which gives the mole fractions, are put in a simple form, ready to be solved. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
