The leaf essential oils of ten species of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) naturalized in Rwanda were analysed by GC and GC–MS coupling on two capillary columns of different polarity (OV101 and Carbowax 20 M). About 60 compounds have been identified. The major constituents of these oils are widespread monoterpenes (pinenes, 1,8‐cineole, limonene, piperitone, terpinyl acetate, etc.: 65.3–99.1%), except for E. fastigata Deane & Maiden oil, which contains mainly sesquiterpenes (56.5%) of which the eudesmols (37.0%) make a large contribution. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
