Tagetes lucida Cav. spp. lucida Cav. (Asteraceae) is a common perennial herb growing wild in Central and Southern America. Within the Tagetes genus, this plant belongs to the subgenus Lucida : its essential oil is characterized by estragole, methyleugenol and anethole as the main components. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts and was analysed by GC with two different stationary phases (OV‐1 and CW‐20M) and GC–MS with various ionization techniques (EI, PICI, NICI), both as such and after fractionation. Fractionation was obtained by distillation under vacuum followed by repeated column‐chromatography of the distillation residue. Fifty‐three compounds were identified, the main ones being anethole (23.8%), methyleugenol (24.3%) and estragole (33.9%). © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
