The current test procedure for propensity to spontaneous heating, results from which might sometimes be expected to stand up in law, have in recent years been shown to be flawed. In the last two years significant progress has been made both towards correcting the basis of the current test method and developing an entirely new one. These are described herein against a background of a review of other advances in the approach since the 1970s. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
