This is a report on the immediate pre–post treatment response of recruited and nonrecruited bulimic patients to psychological treatment. There were many similarities and some differences between the groups prior to treatment. Although both groups significantly improved with treatment, no differences between the groups were found on measures of disturbed eating behaviour, psychopathology and bulimic behaviours. The implications of the results are discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and Eating Disorders Association.
