Pollution of the atmosphere by emissions, noise pollution and other adverse effects on the environment associated with vehicular travels can be measured in terms of the travel distances. This article examines the expected travel distance from a suburb or satellite township to the city core. For convenience both the township and the city core are taken to be circles of different radii. Several travel plans and the associated expected travel distances, along with the general moments and densities of the travel distances, are discussed. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
