The possibilities of applying geophysics in medieval archaeology began to be considered by Czech archaeologists as early as 1970–1971. Since that time a broad range of these methods, principally or geoelectricity, magnetometry and microgravimetry, has been used in solving different problems related to fortified settlements, sacral buildings, extinct villages, urban historical centres, etc. In the present paper both the method of field work and of processing the data on PC, plus typical examples of comprehensive investigations of different medieval sites in the Czech Republic, are presented with special attention to the territory of Moravia. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
