1. This paper proposes a method for a general classification of estuaries in Peninsular Malaysia for development planning. 2. Data from ten estuaries around Peninsular Malaysia were used for classification. 3. The classification is based on the salinity structure of the estuary; the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, phosphate and suspended material; the diversity of the benthic population; and the utilization of fish resources. 4. Indices for estuarine water quality and importance of estuarine resources are presented. 5. Due to the diverse nature and use of the estuaries sampled only three classes are identified at present indicating the potential use of natural resources: low, moderate and high estuary quality. 6. Using the classification method, representative estuaries may be selected for future detailed investigation and the results used as the basis for the management of other estuaries. ©1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
