The complexes [(COT)Ln{N(SiMe 3 ) 2 }(THF)] (Ln = late lanthanide metal) are readily accessible but, until now, the samarium analogue has proved elusive. The latter can be formed in solution but is easily desolvated during the isolation process, leading to a highly associated complex which is only soluble in coordinating solvents or in the presence of ancillary ligands.
