In this article we explore the use of a Monte Carlo technique for the solution of the stream function in a two‐dimensional inviscid fluid flow problem. We found that the technique is relatively easy to use and can achieve acceptable accuracy if enough random samples are taken. Classroom applications showed that students find the method easier to understand and apply than other techniques. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Comput Appl Eng Educ 8: 38–42, 2000
