This article presents the first‐hand experience associated with developing and implementing network server‐based interactive multimedia courseware for a fundamental course in nuclear engineering at the University of Missouri—Rolla. Detailed structure of the multimedia courseware and its implementation are described. In addition, an evaluation based on the data gathered by the software and feedback from students on the effectiveness of this courseware for improving teaching and learning is presented. This evaluation shows that nearly 80% of the students found the courseware to be a useful catalyst in facilitating their learning process. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
