The objective of this article is to propose a highly effective computer‐based teaching methods in an image‐processing course. The image‐processing course is heavily mathematically oriented. With the multimedia technology, it is easy to implement an innovative teaching methods using computer to attract student attention in the image‐processing course. However, such technology has not lived up to the potential of effective teaching and learning. To teach the students on how to derive a mathematics expression by using a computer is not effective as using chalk and a blackboard. Students tend to forget the process of the mathematics derivations, and hence, it is not easy to remember mathematics formulas. Therefore, to make multimedia technology useful for teaching and learning, one needs to incorporate vast amounts of artificial intelligence techniques into computer software. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
