The cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether with weakly acidic benzoic acids ( 1 and 4 ) and related carboxylic acids ( 3 and 5 ) in conjunction with SnBr 4 led to living polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs). The steric effects of the phenyl group directly connected to the carbonyl group in the carboxylate counteranion on the living nature and the polymer MWDs are discussed.
