Some novel polyhydroxypolyamides were prepared by the condensation polymerization of esterified D ‐glucaric and galactaric acid with 1° diamines containing one or more heteroatoms. The polymers then were compared according to their molecular weights, thermal properties (glass‐transition temperature and melting points), and solubilities in water and methanol. The influence on the solubility brought about by the introduction of a charge onto the polymers possessing a tertiary nitrogen in their primary structure was investigated. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
