Abstract The transmission system penalty of RZ and NRZ modulation formats due to polarization‐mode dispersion (PMD) in a 375 km (5×25 dB) dispersion‐managed optically amplified system is studied. The RZ format shows a higher tolerance to PMD degradation than the NRZ format at higher PMD values. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 25: 297–300, 2000.
