We develop a method to measure the evolution of the temperature of laser‐induced plasma during the initial period by using a plasma flash. The plasma emission is considered as blackbody radiation during the first detonation stage, and bremsstrahlung radiation during its expansion period. Based on the Planck formula and the bremsstrahlung radiation formula, the plasma temperature evolution during the initial period is obtained, which is helpful for the presented measurement methods to determine the temperature evolution during the entire process. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
