The transfer function describing the behavior of the Y‐branched optical fiber bundle displacement sensor strongly depends on how the radiation pattern of the light emitted by the transmitting bundle is modeled. A quasi‐Gaussian beam model is presented in this paper for sensor characterization purposes. The parameters defining beam properties are obtained from experimental data employing a least squares fitting technique. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 25: 138–141, 2000.
