An innovative monopole antenna with a parasitic helix mounted on the ground plane is designed for installation on mobile‐phone handsets. Unlike the conventional monopole antenna, measurements showed that the added parasitic helix could result in a wider bandwidth for the whole antenna. The radiation patterns and the polarization properties of the monopole antenna are also shown to be relatively unchanged. Results at 1.8 GHz,which is the operating frequency of PCS (personal communications services) or GSM1800, will be presented. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
